Extended Abstract
Background and objectives
agricultural research Impact assessment can improve implementation and prioritization of research and finally lead to optimal allocation of resources in research programs. It is not possible to allocate limited resources and identify the social value of technical knowledge and technologies and judgment about them in research. Therefore this study aimed to assess the economic, technical, social and political effectiveness of the research, educational and extension activities of the National Cotton Research Institute during the period 1391-1402.
Materials and methods
the main objective of this study was to investigate the role and effectiveness of the Iranian cotton research institute in agriculture and natural resources and estimate the indicators of economic, social, environment, governance and scientific effectiveness of its activities. The indices used to evaluate the economic effectiveness of the outcomes introduced by the institute include the increase in the amount and value of agricultural produce, reduction of production costs, reduction of imports, increase of exports and improvement of production process. Social indicators include improvement of the health of the target society and the amount of the bill and regulations and guiddlines which have been approved by counting scientific papers. Extension publics and book printing. Therefore In this evaluation, 21 research outcomes in four areas of breeding, agronomy, plant medicine and engineering technology were examined. The data were compiled based on the institute's information, the level of acceptance of technologies in the field and economic and technical indicators.
Results
The results showed that the introduction of new cotton varieties and modern agricultural technologies increased fiber production by about 63 thousand in 1402 and generated economic income of 17,746 billion Rials. Also, the use of these messages reduced production costs by 1.771 billion Rials and saved about 159 million cubic meters of water in cotton farming. The benefit-cost ratio(economic effectiveness) of the institute's research activities was estimated at 1402 about 17.3 in the year 2023 , i.e , for each Rial of research costs, 17.3 Rial economic benefit for cotton growers and other stakeholders were evaluated. In addition to economic effects, application of this impacts in improving the efficiency of resources consumption, reducing the use of pesticides and chemicals fertilizers, increasing water productivity, improved seed quality and reduced dependence on imports had an effective role.
Conclusion
The results showed that continued investment in cotton applied research will lead to higher economic and social returns for the country's agricultural sector and can contribute to achieving food security, sustainable employment and the textile industry development.
